Bring the Classroom to Life

Students are tired of dull assignments. Can you blame them?
How many times do you dread going to a meeting or workshop because you know it will be dull and useless to you. Don't you appreciate when a presenter offers hands-on activities and interactive discussion that is relevant and interesting? Consider the type of learning that you appreciate and then apply that to your classroom, no matter the age level!

There are many websites that are dedicated to making learning challenging and motivating. Check out this little brain teaser, Monster Mind Reader (flash-based):

I like that it makes the participants do the math (adding and subtracting) and then brings the students to a higher level by challenging them to figure out how it works. I know adults who needed a little guidance. :)

The entire coolmath.com site has a wonderful objective:

An amusement park of math designed for fun! Come for the games... Stay for the lessons.

There are sites all over the web that offer activities that can be incorporated into existing lessons. It takes a little searching and a little lesson revision but your students will definitely appreciate the change!

Hey Dr.Z,
I loved the cool math web site. And you're right it is challenging even for adults. But fun enough to keep coming back for more--however embarrassing.
P.S.
I love blogging!!!

Dr. Z,

Number Monster is a nice way to practice facts. It replaces flashcards which are definitely not for the "digital natives" in our classrooms.
